Joe, I've driven out fresh swarms with smoke a few times.  It doesn't take
much of an offensive odor to make a fresh swarm to change their mind about
the suitability of the new cavity, as evidenced by all the hived swarms that
abscond due to the odor of paint, etc.  The key factor is likely the
freshness of the swarm.
