I have on a number of occasions found unexpected larvae developing in cells placed in a swarm box. I've always suspected that they were cases of thelytoky--the case in which a female worker can lay a fertilized egg. This process has been scientifically documented in colonies of Apis mellifera (by genetic analysis), and is common in some clones of Apis capensis. Such an occurrence would appear to be the result of workers transferring eggs or larvae. I also would like to see some actual observational reports of the physical transfer of eggs or larvae.
