The use of essential oils in hives is roughly equivalent to using homeopathic remedies. The following critique of homeopathics is instructive:

> What then are the dangers associated with Homeopathy? Critics, such as Steven Barrett, M.D., cite the following:

> Delayed Treatment: Homeopathic preparations can be obtained over-the-counter in the U.S. Patients may be misled into self-medication when they actually have a serious illness that requires conventional medical attention.

[While you are waiting for your essential oils to "work" the colonies may succumb to treatable disorders.]

> Wasted Resources: Homeopathic treatments can be expensive. Since many practitioners regard them as placebos, their cost and the cost of consulting a homeopathic physician could be considered wasted money.

[You may believe in your snake oil, but if it does little or no good, that still qualifies as a waste of time and money.]
