There are lots of unique situations, with maybe no ready answers except 
"that is the way it is"

I knew a farmer, in the Annapolis Valley, Nova Scotia, many years ago now, 
who kept a "hive" (two deeps) under the apple trees in his orchard,year 
round.  The only time he opened it was once a year in early October, to "get 
his fall honey"  about four or five pounds was all he wanted.  That was the 
extent of his beekeeping or his interest in the bees, other than 
understanding that they did help a bit with pollination!!!
