I use carpet in front and behind the hive, but not
directly under it.

One thing to watch for: I once got too close with the
bushhog and quickly pulled the entire back piece of
carpeting into the bushhog - sucked it in like a strand of
spaghetti.  If the hive stand had been resting on the
carpet, it probably would have tipped the hive over.  Not
somthing I (or the bees) would have enjoyed.

p.s. Carpeting is also great as a base for garden paths
under mulch or pea gravel.
