Hello Peter & All,

>According to Stephen Hawking in A Brief History of Time, "a theory --------

The Hawking quotes are from page 9 & 10 of the book. Many of my books have
certain pages marked with slips of paper. The above book reads like a
college text until those pages and then the reader feels as if Hawking is
speaking directly to you. Giving you a brief glimpse into the mind of a
genius.

I think only fitting to pick up the part where Peter stopped an continue as
relevant in my opinion as in the next sentence Hawking quotes Karl Popper
( as did Adrian).

Hawking quote from page 10 of above book:
"As the philosopher of science Karl Popper has emphasized , a good theory is
characterized by the fact that it makes a number of predictions that could
in principle be disproved or falsified by observation. Each time new
experiments are observed to agree with the predictions the theory survives,
and our confidence in it is increased; but if ever a new observation is
found to disagree ,we have to abandon or MODIFY the theory"

Also

" At least that is what is supposed to happen ,but you can always question
the competence of the person who carried out the observation"

Sincerely,
Bob Harrison
