One hundred years ago
> Bad wintering is the greatest hindrance to the progress of the industry. In the severe winter of 1917-1918 it was conservatively estimated that fifty percent of the bees of New York State died. This great loss was hardly recovered from when it was repeated in 1919 - 1920. The loss is measured not only by the number of colonies that die, but also by the weakening of the remaining colonies, since they do not produce as much honey the following summer as they otherwise would.
