Washboarding is generally thought to be a cleaning behavior. Gerry Loper,
Tucson USDA lab, retired, told me that AFB in rock caves in AZ tended to
scrub the rock face before building comb. Pettis and a collegue posted a
short note stating that washboarding was both age related AND increased from
glass to wood to slate.
