Most standard SBB are made with 1/8" hardware cloth. You mentioned 
juvenile small hive beetles falling through, as far as I know once 
they are adults the size does not change. Male beetles are the 
smaller ones and females are the larger ones. If you want female 
beetles to fall through and not bees falling through you need what 
they call #6 hardware cloth or 1/6 inch mesh or 6 squares per 
square inch. I've looked for good sources and think this might be 
one
