I didn't mention why is interesting how you manage to
control highly infested colonies with varroa.
At that beekeeping symposium in Croatia which I
mentioned in previous post, we were informed that
Croatians and Germans together are planning to conduct
an experimental mating station at one of many Croatian
islands. Two years ago they didn't succeeded in
keeping alive 150+ colonies evenly infested with
varroa at the start point, (queens were from many
European countries) without any intervention, at that
same isolated island. Now they are planning to start
again, but now they will abandon the princip "let it
be" and are planning to intervene at some point when
infestation will be critical. When I asked them how
they will do that, R. Buchler said that they will
choose some treatment.
Obviously at that time they didn't find that can be
very important how controlling will be.
Why they plan to make mating station? Because colonies
on the island will be treated as drone builders. Their
hypothesis is that only best most resistant colonies
will be able to produce healthy drones in highly
infested colonies. They hope that drones will somehow
pass the resistance on the next generation.
Obviously from some reasons they, like me, think that
keeping highly infested colonies with varroa is good
way to go.
