>UPDATE- HEALTH HAZARD ALERT - VARIOUS IMPORTED HONEY PRODUCTS MAY CONTAIN
NITROFURANS

>OTTAWA, March 23, 2004 - The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA)is
warning the public not to consume various imported honey because these
products may contain nitrofurans.

The public warning issued on March 13, 2004 is being updated to include
additional lot codes, product details, new affected products, and
distribution
>information.

>The following products are affected by this alert.

>The CFIA is continuing its investigation in cooperation with the various
>importers to identify and recall the affected products from the
marketplace.
>The above list of affected products would be updated as required.

>Nitrofurans are antimicrobial drugs which are banned for use in Canada in
>food producing animals. Consumption of foods contaminated with
nitrofurans
>may pose a human health risk related to the inherent toxicity of the drug
and
>the potential to cause allergies. There have been no reported illnesses
>associated with the consumption of this product.

>The CFIA is monitoring the effectiveness of the recall.
