I've found no reference to the 1930's, but plenty to 1956 when they were
imported into brazil.

I've seen lots of references myself (including encyclopedias, etc.), but no
original source.  Some time ago a saw a show on PBS (nova perhaps?) on the
building of the pramids.  An expert explained that honey was used in
treating wounds and how they knew that.  (But I don't remember they saying
anything about finding honey itself).
