As an interesting anecdote, this past weekend I participated in a class on
removing bees from buildings.

In the second part of the class we removed two feral hives from the wall of
a building.

In the first hive, the comb was oriented parallel to the wall studs. In
the second, just a few feet away and on the same wall, the orientation was
perpendicular to the studs.

Orientation, lighting, weather, etc were substantially identical given the
close proximity of the two hives.
