Gene > .....the question came up as to the minimum size of operation (ie number of hives) one should have before they even begin rearing queens... Taking this question a step further 'what is the minimum size operation do you think it would take for a serious breeding program


Great question and I wish the answer was exactly known but I'm not sure it is.  I've "heard" that 100 colonies are the minimum needed.  I think it's a probability calculation based on available alleles in a given population.  If you want to make progress toward a trait, considering polyandry in open breeding populations,  you need a level of diversity in the genetics -some science or formula would be helpful.
