sneakers"

Google fails again. My old fashioned dictionary (a book) lists three
definitions before mentioning cleats on shoes...

A cleat is a strip of wood or other material attached to a surface for
better purchase or to prevent slipping.

The attached photo is from C.C. Miller's "Fifty Years among the Bees." The
wooden cleats are resting on Philo's forearms.
