Open feeding is something that is IMO unwise in populated areas.  We 
have done plenty, but out in areas where the only people around are 
farmers and they are far enough away that there will be no issues. They 
are also wise enough to see the hives from a distance and be aware if 
there is an issue.

There is seldom any problem while the syrup lasts.  Usually the bees are 
quite docile as long as there is enough surface area or containers for 
all the hives, but sometimes all hell breaks loose when it runs out, 
especially if happens in the middle of a hot day and the bees are still 
hungry or starving.

Syrup being open fed should be thick syrup.  Thin syrup will soak and 
sink the straw and also wet visiting bees.
