Keith,  I have found that the brad nailer (18ga./1.5 in brads) works better
for me.  The staple will split the bottom bar because of the groove.  I also
use glue painted on with a stubby paint brush. Glue adds a tremendous amount
of strength to the joint.  Takes more time, but worth it in the long haul.
