I have a 32 acre farm and found that 12 FOR ME was enough.  But most of mine
was wild black berries, tulip popular and such. I never did have and apple
orchard (yet). Start off with at least that amount and increase it until your
getting good pollination or the hive apple honey production per hive goes down.
