For those of you who have seen failing hives
firsthand, what sort of unusual behavior, if any, have
you noticed? Have the bees been behaving differently
than in hives that have struggled for other reasons?

Apologies for such a basic question; I haven't seen
any CCD hives or read reports that address this.
