The Department of Conservation and Land Management is working together with
the Water Corporation to develop a Feral Bee Control Strategy. The European
honey bee (Apis mellifera) is an exotic species that was introduced into
Western Australian in the 1840s. Although they are the same species, feral
bees differ from managed bees. Feral bees are those that have escaped from a
managed apiary hive to establish unmanaged hives in many areas of the State.
Feral bees are generally aggressive, have a tendency to swarm and they are
of little value for commercial honey production or for pollination of crops.
