On a point of clarity, an acronym is a word formed by combining initial
letters (UNESCO, scuba) or syllables and letters (radar, sonar) of a series
of words.  The examples from earlier postings on this topic are initialisms,
not acronyms.  Both are extremely useful in written, typed or verbal
communication.
