A similar mod is if one only uses one side of a bottom bottom, turn the other side into a cover.  I know a commercial beekeeper with thousands of hives who added the cleats to the top front and back of hive for ease in lifting and tipping, then made combo top/bottoms so he never came up short while at distant yards.
