The dire state is only experienced by those beekeepers who fail at parasite
management of their livestock -- specifically for the varroa mite.  In our
commercial operation, it costs us somewhere in the ballpark of $10-$15 per
year per hive to control varroa using solely organic methods. IMHO, the
"dire state" is simply of result of the poor degree of bee husbandry
practiced by many beekeepers.
