To me, the NYS migratories are a bunch of cowboys. Drop their bees wherever they want. Screw anyone else. If your apiaries...mine have been located and registered for the last 35 years...are in their way...tough. 5 truck loads right in there next to my apiaries...within a mile in many places. Now...beetles. Wonderful. I've tried talking to the biggest offender. He asked me..."Why are YOU in NYS?" I guess he was referring to me living in Vermont. I mentioned that I have been keeping bees in NE NYS since 1982. Yet...there's that apiary, with 50 colonies, 1/2 mile away cross lots.

The records on registered bee yards were closely guarded by the government but the bee inspectors knew where they were. They took advantage of that information to site their bee yards in good locations that they had found out about by inspecting their competitor's hives. Often they would use aggressive inspection to intimidate beekeepers. The animosity this system generated caused the program to be defunded in the 1990s. Currently inspection in NYS is a bare shadow of what it once was. They inspect hives for interstate travel and pay little attention to the problems of instate beekeepers.
