Yoon,

I think the important part of this paradox is 'seem to'.  Without testing it
is a simple guess and I am sure that in many cases feral colonies die out and
are replaced by the next swarm to come along without the occasional observer
noticing.  Your 'test to destruction' approach may shed light on this (so long
as you mark your queens).
