OK, Allen, I did go over your drop data.  When I compare the range of the
values for any short series, it often exceeds the mean.  That sort of
variability from day to day is what bothers me about using any single
natural fall number for management decisions.

Regarding the consistency of alcohol washes, I will be the first to state
that I have seen only limited data (mostly from me).  I often do two washes
from the same hive, and I was recently in a situation in which I was able
to take a series of washes from a number of hives over time.  I am frankly
surprised by the consistency that I see.

I never observe as wide a range as you saw in the two washes that you took
from the same hive, although, as you said, you took the bee samples from
two different locations (brood nest vs honey frame) in the hive.  I always
make a point to take all washes from the same general area, which could be
the difference.

I appreciate your challenging of my statements and opinions--since I am not
trying to defend any position.  I simply wish to determine the facts in
beekeeping matters.
