Not only is there no scientific basis for this, but it will raise food prices for all of us. There is a clause in the bill that allows any citizen to sue a food manufacturer for alleged noncompliance, and it's up to the manufacturer to prove otherwise. The people who benefit from this are the lawyers (as always) and the organic growers, whose higher-priced products will now become more competitive, and who will be able to further raise their prices due to new customers driven to them by the scary labels.

That's because it all sounds so reasonable. The argument goes, "If there's nothing dangerous about GMOs, why are the big bad agro-chemical companies afraid of a simple label?"

I wonder how organic vegetable growers would react to a required label that says, "This food product may have been sprayed with Bacillus thuringiensis toxin". It's just information, after all; doesn't the consumer have a right to know?
