We know that bees are particularly lacking in foresight and will rob honey from hives stinking from foulbrood, and so forth. They will fly into honey tanks, hot syrup, fires and such as well. So, when someone tells me that bees "avoid" CCD hives which have no detectable odor or other aspects that we know of, I look for another explanation. Many times I have seen dead hives with several boxes of honey not being robbed. I have to put it down to lack of scouts. Maybe there are times when there are simply fewer scouts out looking for dead hives. I don't really know
