Anxiety and pressure to do many things (some self imposed). Pumping is
something they can control and I believe many people find storing that much
milk empowering.

Fear of BF not working out and/or low supply.

Outdated info - many people are pumping to get out the plugged ducts they
read about. Lumps are interpreted as plugged ducts and they want to get
them out and avoid mastitis.

They really feel the fullness - some people find the fullness very
uncomfortable so they pump and then they make more - a vicious cycle. I
find many are not open to working on reducing volume so they will be more
comfortable. This may be related to the all too common anxiety I am seeing.

There is also a trend of attempting to pump enough milk that they can stop
pumping and feed the baby from the freezer for the rest of the BF journey.
