Vaccine for bees? This is not really news, it was first reported in 2015
Salmela, H., Amdam, G. V., & Freitak, D. (2015). Transfer of immunity from mother to offspring is mediated via egg-yolk protein vitellogenin. PLoS pathogens, 11(7), e1005015.
the update is:
Harwood, G., Amdam, G., & Freitak, D. (2019). The role of Vitellogenin in the transfer of immune elicitors from gut to hypopharyngeal glands in honey bees (Apis mellifera). Journal of insect physiology, 112, 90-100.
Sensibly, they do not mention vaccine in the recent paper. Perhaps it went the way of:
Giese, Sebastian, and Matthias Giese. "Oral Vaccination of Honeybees Against Varroa Destructor." Molecular Vaccines. Springer, Vienna, 2013. 269-278.
They wrote in the typical fashion:
> First reported in the USA, a mysterious so-called colony collapse disorder (CCD) decimated the bee colonies there between 50 and 90%. The huge global loss of honey bees as pollinators has a dramatic impact of agricultural pollination. ... We developed a DNA vaccine for oral application which is able to reconstitute the full function of the bee’s immune system. This vaccine is absolutely biological safe, well-tolerated, show no side effects, and does not form any burden for the environment.
note: anyone who starts off by saying "The huge global loss of honey bees" is disqualified from informed discussion. It's downhill from there. Interestingly, this last paper has been cited by No One Ever. (Well by one person. Me. Here. Now.)
