> What are folks saying when the mention bees on sawdust. I don’t see this but have heard it many times. Do the bees press the sawdust on their pollen baskets and pack it cells back in the colony?
I have a video of a bee collecting sawdust, actually packing it on its leg. I don't think they collect just any powder. I submit that the aroma of fresh sawdust is the cue that it is plant based and could have nutritional benefit. Propolis collecting has more to do with the suitability to use the material for caulking, hence their attraction to road tar, etc.
By the way, bees being a nuisance collecting sawdust led to this true story. There was a sawmill not far from where I live which used to get visiting by large numbers of bees at certain times of the year. I know a guy who had a bee yard not far from there. Well, someone poisoned the hives and he was pretty sure he knew who did it. No proof, though. Some time later the sawmill caught fire and was not rebuilt.
