About 30 of my yards are in bear country, and must be electric fenced.
Perhaps we have wimpy bears in the California foothills, but the fence
design that I describe at http://scientificbeekeeping.com/bear-fence/ works
very well for us. Once we've trained a bear with a good shock to the face,
they are rarely a problem again.
During our drought, when the soil dries completely, we've needed to roll
chicken wire on the ground around some of our fences, hooked to the ground
wire, in order to keep the more determined bears out.
