I'd quarrel with the designation "late 20th century" (Varese died in 1965). However, I have this set and love it. Varese is a composer completely free of cliche, and he reinvents himself for just about every piece. Chailly plays the works as *music*, rather than as dissertations on music. Steve Schwartz
