Mr. Norrman: There was once a Bay Cities recording of Louis Kaufman playing Piston's first violin concerto. No other recordings on CD. Some on LP. His music isn't for everyone; I don't find it academic, myself, but some do. Not every work of his is equally good, of course. If you can get to hear his 8th symphony on the Albany label sometime, please do - it's .very. strange and may change your mind about him as a composer; it caused me to return to his other music, which I had earlier typecast unfairly before hearing the 8th. But again no one will respond to everything or anything in the same way, nor does every piece by a composer sound the same- to be banal but also alas truthful. As to other recordings of Lees' 4th symphony, there are none, that I know of. His 2nd and 3rd symphonies appeared on LP once. His violin sonatas and some other music of his can be heard on CD too. The news that the Buffalo Philharmonic has been contracted by Naxos for recordings in the American Classics series is excellent, and to hear that Ms. Falletta will be conducting is better news still- imho. Thanks to Mr. Mullenger re the review news. -Eric Schissel
