What about the calculation guideline of 2.5 to 2.7 oz per pound of body
weight per 24 hour day?
Using 2.5 oz/lb, 32 oz is about right for a 12lb 8oz baby. Are the
advocates of the 32oz max saying that all babies need something more when
they pass that weight? Even a guideline like this is for estimating, to be
sure baby is getting enough, not an absolute RULE.

The usual time I give this guideline to moms is when they are going back to
work and want to know how much pumped milk they must provide. Then I show
them how to feed with the bottle, which is NOT upside down in the mouth
while baby is on his back. The only absolute rule I give them is to watch
the diapers for the standard "Peeps & Poops". That will tell them how to
adjust the 2.5 to 2.7 guideline for their baby.
