I suggest that if the mother is at all upset about this, as well she should be after being treated nastily and the doc not even looking at the options, she could write a letter to the top dogs, stating what occurred and that she does not wish to see that particular doc again. Request another. That should make a pretty strong statement. She could also state how helpful you and the other prescribing doc (your boss) were and that this is the kind of treatment she expects. Your role is to support and protect the bf mother and baby and that is what you did. As Dr. Jack says, the mother can make the final decision whether to use the med after receiving all the info.
