Re: the baby who's "throwing up breastmilk" but not formula: Maybe mom is doing something different with positioning the baby when she formula feeds - maybe, without being really aware of it, she's holding the baby more upright w/formula bottles, or maybe she's even fdg. the baby with the baby sitting up in an infant seat or something. Or maybe when she nurses, the baby goes off to sleep, so mom, not wanting to "disturb" her, puts her down right away flat in a crib, so then babe regurges, whereas when she gives formula maybe the baby stays awake so she keeps her in more of a sitting position for a while so the stuff has more of a chance to "settle". Worth asking about anyway. And yes, I agree that eliminating dairy products completely for at least 10 days-2 wks. is probably worthwhile. The other thing I'd ask is, how's the baby's wt. gain *without* formula supp.? IF baby's happy & gaining & stooling & all that other stuff, maybe the "throwing up" is insignificant - except for the mom. I absolutely HATE to see babies with any hx. of asthma in the family go to formula! At WIC I saw this so often, and when a mom told me that her older children had asthma or other allergies(esp. if formula-fed), I'd move heaven and earth to keep them away from formula. There just seems to be this whole interconnected complex w/asthma, allergies, rashes, resp. illnesses, and generalized failure to do robustly well in these babies. These tend to be the families you see year after year, kid after kid, with the pale skin & red scaly cheek patches & lots of green snot all winter & either squishy-looking pudgy or puny, pinched-looking kids. The ones for whom "it's always something".
