I've recommended a few Kuhlau (1786-1832) discs in the past, including his piano quartets on a 2-cd Dacapo set and the opera Lulu on Kontrapunkt. At the same time, I was less than enthusiastic about a Chandos disc of overtures and a disc of violin sonatas on CPO. What this adds up to is a degree of healthy skepticism concerning Kuhlau's solo piano music. It happens that there are two on-going series of his piano music - Brigandi on Nuova Era and Trondhjem on Rondo Grammofon. I have two questions: 1. What's your opinion of the piano music compared to Kuhlau's other works? 2. Which series would you recommend, if any? Don Satz [log in to unmask]
