In searching for references I came across this! Eric Scholten M.D. wrote a letter to the editor about "a novel correction of inverted nipples during pregnancy." He describes the insertion of a "barbell" and says "Thus a continuously everted nipple can be achieved: it will remain everted until suckling of the newborn baby begins, at which time the body jewelry can be removed, although this is not strictly necessary. At the time of writing of this letter, 2 mothers have been treated in this manner. Both successfully breastf-fed their babies for at least 3 months." Do you suppose this will get more OB's into exploring their potential for anticipatory guidance and facilitation of successful BF? K.
