Thanks to Martin Anderson for posting his review of the MacMillan Cello
Concerto.

The only point I want to make in reply is one that I made a month or two
ago when I discussed Osmo Vanska's recordings of all three pieces making up
MacMillan's "Triduum" - the concertante piece for cor anglais and orchestra
"The World's Ransoming", the Cello Concerto, and the symphony "Vigil".
Although these are three separate "stand-alone" pieces there are very
strong thematic and structural links between them, and none of the three
fully makes sense outside of the context of the other two.

Martin is very complimentary about Osmo Vanska. I heard him conduct the BBC
Scottish SO a couple of times before I moved back to England two years ago
- including the best Sibelius 2 I've ever heard and a masterly Sinfonia da
Requiem (Britten) - and I'm glad to hear that his early promise is being
realised. He's one to watch.
