It's too bad that I am no longer in touch with the Farkas student and
devotee that I knew in college--he new every recording that Farkas made and
didn't make (one crime of omission:  Farkas never recorded the Tchaikovsky
5th symphony!).  He did tell me one story about a Reiner/Chicago Strauss
Don Quixote in which PF used a styrofoam coffee cup and a horn mouthpiece
to fill in for a metal mute that would work or wasn't available.
