At the hospital where I work the question of NPO a baby for circumcision came up and we were unable to find any literature on the subject as to whether it was even necessary and if so what time frame would be appropriate for breast vs. ABM babies. One of our peds said that it was necessary for all babies for a minimum of two hours to allow for as complete emptying of the stomach as possible to reduce the risk of vomiting and aspiration. We surveyed other hospitals within the community and found there was no routine on pre-op (NPO) for circs. It varied from no pre-op to NPO for up to six hours.
