With regard to the latest discussion on gastro-esophageal reflux, it should really be diagnosed if the baby is symptomatic. There is a test called a pneumocardiogram 5 (PCG 5) which does a good job of diagnosing this problem and giving some idea of the severity. Continual refluxing of gastric acid into the esophagus and possibly into the bronchial tree causes severe irritation and eventual scarring.
