Carol, The thing you are describing is a paladai. It is used normally as an oil lamp but Indian families have used them as breastfeeding aids, probably because most families have one. Our OT is taking a trip to India this fall and I have asked her to bring me one. Apparently they are also used in the middle east, although may not be called the same thing. My daughter is living in Baku, Azerbaijan and describes a similar tool. Interestingly an article about this appeared last week on the front page of our local newspaper. It was by Huntly Collins of Knight Ridder Newspapers. I would be happy to post it if anyone is interested. It describes a study going on in Philadelphia to determine wither these traditional Indian feeding cups could help "American babies learn to breast feed."
