I agree that, with the right gifts, blindness should not rule out a singer
doing opera, at least in some roles.  What I was wondering is whether the
repertoire that would be feasible would be too limited to make a career
out of.  In Bocelli's case there is the added factor that his voice is
probably more suited for pop singing.  But then again, I can't think of
any other major opera singers who were blind (although I am not an opera
expert--can anyone else)?
