I suppose some consider her a lightweight, but there is something so clean and human in Arlene Auger's voice . . . in He Shall Feed His Sheep from Messiah (Trevor Pinnock, et al), or her Schubert disc on Hyperion. Such pure, resonant tone . . . why is it that some singers seem to think that orbiting (in an ellipse) the note is preferable to actually landing on it? Jim Saunders
