I always believed that these programs were developed to help mothers
with no other financial support stay home and MOTHER their children.
True, there have been cases of abuse in the system. After working for
WIC the last 2 years, I can't help but wonder if that is because we
spend all our resources identifying new client base, and so little
verifying eligibility. Now thanks to Work-fare, I am not sure what the
point of the system is.
I have a good friend and fellow WIC BF Program staff who has lost a
great aount of support thanks to work share. She is an outstanding
mother of 4, and my very ideal of what these rograms were designed to
do. However, thanks toWork-fare, she must quit WIC to find more $. She
has lost her phone and is in the process of trying to sell her house
before she loses it.
Maybe we need to return to a community based system and boot Big Brother
to the curb. I would gladly plant more vegetables in my garden to help
my neighbor.
Maybe the Begining point should be teaching good mothering skills, and
how else would we do that than at the breast?
I for one will stick with WIC and League until we make them obsolete. I
believe we can: One baby, one mother, one family, one health care
professional, one clinic, one community at a time.

I would love to continue this discussion with you. Prehaps we can find
the solution together! We may even need a new list!

Eschew Obfuscation!

"A newborn baby has only three demands. They are warmth in the arms of
its mother, food from her breasts, and security in the knowledge of her
presence. Breastfeeding satisfies all three." ~ Dr. Grantly Dick-Read
