Hi I am a midwife currently residing in Indonesia. Hoping to do the IBLC this year. On the question of baby-friendly. I know of at least one hospital who has the award but are still very obviously keeping babies in a nursery. When I asked about it I was told that only the first class mothers could room in if they wanted. What this means is that those women living closest to the poverty line (usually well below at present) dont get the breastfeeding support and education they desperately need. It's a sad world we live in. I am currently working with a babe who has been on decongestants for 15 weeks, (since birth) I am sure this babe has a cows milk allergy and we are in the process of getting it back on the breast. It has been breast refusing progressivley since it was comped with formula, probably because it is wheezing and did not like lying down at the breast. (The mother was told to give formula because it was "only" gaining 100g per week feeding 4 - 5 hourly at the breast - need I say more!!! The question is how long would any effect of rebound congestion take to wear off now that mom has stopped the decongestants?
