I saw the new book out on 'The Mummies of Urumchi' by Elizabeth Wayland Barber.
These mummies were dicovered in W. China in the 80's and are tall, red haired
and wear tartan type material -- so rather embarrasing to Chinese and not well
studied.

On the cover of the book (and an insideplate) a beautiful colour pic of a mummy
of a baby aged around 3 month old, buried with an animal horn cup on one side of
him and on the other a 'nippled sheep's bladder'. The Sunday Times article
speculated that this was cos his mother died and he had been offered other foods
-- have not seen in the book if this speculation is anything other than a guess.

The mummies in general date from first millenium BC, don't know if book gives a
better date for this baby mummy.

You can see a tiny, indistinct pic of the baby on the cover at Amazon.co.uk
(didn't check to see if out in US and on Amazon.com) --the blob on the left is
the bladder. No pic of this baby on the Takla Makan mummy website :-(
