David Stewart: >Is there any 'serious' music that he has written which would deserve any >special attention. So far, my favorite of his concert works is "Five Sacred Trees," a bassoon concerto. I've heard his tuba, flute, trumpet, and violin concerti. The trumpet concerto (written for Cleveland Orchestra principal, Michael Sachs) struck me as a kitchen sink of trumpet techniques. It is incredibly difficult, but I find it more complicated than truly involving. The violin concerto I also liked. The other stuff I found I could take or leave. My favorite film scores of his are Close Encounters, The Reivers, and Dracula. His arrangements for the movie Fiddler on the Roof were stunning, turning Broadway hackwork (IMO) into something that approached real music. Steve Schwartz
